Final DVD Cover
Our final DVD cover shows the logo font that we selected with pictures on location and also added pictures of each member through their live performances.
Final Poster
This is our final poster that we made for the band in order to promote them. We ensured that we used the same text in the poster as we did on the DVD cover as a logo to symbolise the band.

The First Draft of our Narrative
After the shoot, we transferred all the footage onto the school computer, and I also decided to copy the footage to try and edit some of the video at home.
I decided to do a rough edit of the narrative to show the others in my group to see if it was something that they could see was working and going in the right direction. I uploaded the video to YouTube so that friends could also see it and give their feedback on it.
This video was the first draft and shows the point of view from the guy. We decided that the narrative didn't make much sense, so we looked at other ways of improving this.

Day of Filming
On the day of filming, we contacted all actors to remind them of meeting times and I also contacted Kerrin to confirm where we were meeting. Jamie and Paige were unable to make the shoot so we made sure we informed them of what we were doing beforehand.
I picked up Chelsea, Connor, Sarah and Josh from Stilton and brought them to my house where I met Kerrin and Claire. We ran through what we them to do and how they should act through each scene, and then got them sorted in costumes and arranged our mise-en-scene.
We then started filming, beginning at the start with the affectionate relationship between the two as they're seen laughing and having fun with each other. We then used an over the shoulder camera shot to get a view of Chelsea opening a note saying 'I love you', to clarify the connection between the couple.
We then got the couple to change outfits and move to the hallway where we had them arguing with each other and the male storm out the door and down the street. Following this we got the female to chase after him trying to get him to come back, however he just brushes her off and moves on. From here we change locations again to a party where the male turns up and dances with his friends showing him having fun without his girlfriend. However she then turns up to the party, but instead of reacting the male simply walks pasts her out the door with his friends showing that he has moved on.
To begin with we filmed from the females perspective, however we then decided that as our band were an all male group that a male perspective may have more of an effect.

Risk Assessment for filming of narrative
Situational Hazards | Actions to be taken |
Cold/Warm Environment | Cast and crew to take jackets on set for in between takes and light clothing as well |
Loose wires | Cast and crew to be aware of wires |
Sharp object/material | Cast and crew to stay away from sharp objects within the kitchen |
Slippery surface | Cast and crew to keep shoes on at all times and if any spillages show, to mop them up immediately |
Trip Hazard | Beware of all surroundings and for all band and crew to wear shoes at all times. |
Adding A Narrative
After receiving our feedback from various audience members, we realised that it was very difficult to satisfy our audience for the duration of the song with just a performance based video.
My idea for adding a narrative was originally to have a storyline from a girls point of view to begin showing her with her boyfriend in a fun relationship to really show the chemistry between the. This was ideally to reflect the lyrics at the start 'we started out as friends, it was cool but it was all pretend' to show them progress into something more than friends. This was where the idea came in that the male character would then give the female a note saying 'I love you' to signify the change in relationship status. As the song progresses, so does time, and the two begin to have problems which are reflected in the lyrics 'How come I never hear you say, I just wanna be with you' and this is the point where the two are seen arguing together and as the boy tries to get her back, she storms out of the door and down the street. Whilst storming down the street, the boy chases after her, but she shrugs him off relating to the lyrics 'I'm soo moving on'.
After this she then goes to a house party with her girl friends to show her having a good time without him around and so she can 'breathe for the first time'. However the boy then shows up at the party, but instead of reacting to it, she walks away past him and out the house with her girls by her side. At the end of the song she then takes the 'I love you' note out of her pocket and throws it on the floor to show that she has well and truly over him.
This video shows a smiliar idea of having the couple arguing at the beginning that I want to create.

DVD Cover Research
Another part of the post production that needed to be completed was to make a DVD cover for our music video. We decided that looking at the bands influences again would also give us an idea of what the band wanted from the DVD as well as looking at other bands from the same genre.
Greenday released a DVD of a live performance and from their DVD cover we can see that they have based it on two main colours, black and red. The band name is in their logo style that its presented in for most of their CD's, and the white contrasts against the background. The front cover (the right) shows a low angle of the main singer showing he is more the leader of the band and also shows the crowd beneath him. On the back cover we can see a small group picture, so that the audience establishes the band if they've not known them before. There is also the list of songs the band performed as well as screen captures from the concert itself which I would like to incorporate into ours. The images and colours of the cover really portray the rock genre the band fit into, so its important to bear in mind some of the colours and styles for our own portrayal.
Mcfly are more the pop genre, which our band are also classed under, so we decided to look at their DVD concert cover. They used the base colour of black with white writing to contrast with this. The images shown on both the front and back cover are all in black and white which could suggest the band want to be portrayed in more of a rock genre way. The songlist is also listed, as well as some of the cast and crew that took part. Finally the Mcfly logo is shown in purple to really stand out from the whole DVD cover as it's the only thing that is seen in colour which really promotes the band.
The DVD cover of Avril Lavigne's live concert was one when she was seen as a rock artist rather than her current pop status. The front cover immediately introduces the artist in black and white to show the rock genre and the name 'Avril Lavigne' is seen in red which stands out from the background. These colours are the used in the same way as Greenday's. The backcover shows what the DVD features and a bit of information about Avril as an artist. There are some screen shots of her performing live as well which are seen in colour and show the audience what to expect. Theres also a significant difference between this DVD and the others i've looked at, and thats that this DVD is classified as a 15, showing that it contains explicit content. This is something to bare in mind whilst making our DVD, to see if we need a classification. The spine is also a vital part of the DVD as it is what you're most likely to see on the shelf. Here they have the name of the artist and the DVD as well as a small picture at the bottom which is good for promotion, however with our DVD being a band this might be more difficult to do.
The final DVD I looked at was All Time Low's which is slightly similar sound to our own band. The name of the band is centred, so that it's the first thing seen to publicise the band. The front cover is then made up of 5 pictures, the centre one showing a crowd and stage shot of the live performance and the other 4 featuring all the members of the band whilst in live performance. I'd like to include some of the pictures from our band performance that we went to see so that people get an idea of what a Starfish gig is like. The back of the DVD then features more images of the live performance on the DVD, a mini biography of the band and the songs featured on the DVD. The cover is very different to the others as the background is featured mainly from images, but there is a use of a grey colour however this doesn't contrast with the background as much as other covers had.

Band Poster Research
I decided to have a look at some of our bands influences when we came on to doing the band poster task to see what conventions were used and gather some ideas for our own poster.
Foo Fighters
The band photo for the Foo Fighters shows the bands rock genre through the location and the use of editing to an almost serpia, black and white. Even though the band perform with instruments, here it doesnt show them with them. Despite this, we don't get the impression that they are a boyband because of their attire the way the group are positioned.
Stereophonics
The stereophonics also follow a quite similar convention to the Foo Fighters. The location in which the photograph was taken is quite derelict and urban which suggests an edgy band that follows the rock genre. The band members are positioned in a way that shows the audience who the main singer, and leader of the band is through the position closest to the camera. The lighting here is very dark as well, typically known for rock genre's and I think the use of the darkened black edges is also very effective in the representation of the band.
Billy Talent
I decided to look at a newer, more modern band to take some ideas from for our band poster. In Billy Talent you can see they're all lined up against a wall which is quite jaded, and their attire is all black which suggests the rock genre. This is also another band which perform with their own individual instruments but the poster does not show this, suggesting its not required.
In the band poster for Paramore, the band are also stood almost in a line, however this is one of the first band posters where the band have been seen with their instruments (except the drummer who just has his drum sticks). The band follows the rock genre convention through their attire of casual jeans and band tshirts and the pose of the band shows they're down to earth, which is something that we also wanted to create. The name of the band also really stands out from the background, and the bottom right corner shows the words 'riot' which is in the style of their album cover and also the name of the album.
This band poster shows the name of the band straight away with the text at the top. The text is very simple, and in some ways could show the simplicity of the band trying to show their down-to-earth nature. The band are stood in a line again, with the lead singer stood stightly forward and the setting of the photograph is quite unclear but shows an edgy genre of rock. The band attire also justifies this and with the lead singer wearing red, it also confirms that he's the main focus.

Other Band Posters
I looked at a few examples of how bands had used the posters to promote themselves and also what text was used. In this example of a pop rock band called The Maine, the band picture is used to acknowledge the band so they become familiar with the audience followed by having the band name in the centre of the poster to contrast with the background. I think this is very effective because we instantly see the name of the band which is the most effective way to promote them. Under the picture and name of the band there is also an image of the bands album, and the name of it as well as saying it's 'available now'. Questionnaire
As we have finished our first draft to our music video, we wanted to know where we could go from there and ensure that we perfected it to suit our target audience. To do so, we decided to make a questionnaire to hand out to peers both male and female, as this is the aimed audience, for their feedback on our video so that we know what areas in particular we need to work on.
1. What part of the video stood out most for you?
2. Was there anything you disliked?
3. Does watching this music video encourage you to go out and listen to more of their music?
4. Does the music video contain what you would expect it to?
5. Are there any changes you would make to the video?
6. Do you think the way it is edited is effective, mainly the effects?
7. Is the video lip synced in time with the lyrics?
8. Overall do you enjoy the music video?
9. Any other comments?
February 14th
During this week, our whole group have been very involved in finishing the first draft of our music video. Jamie has been working mainly on it, due to him having the footage on his laptop, but the rest of us made sure we gave as much input as we could to our own opinions of the video. Jamie seemed very involved in the effects of the video, but it was important that we finished filling the song with clips of footage first and to ensure that there were plenty of cuts during the chorus of the video too.
Individually, I have been working on the behind-the-scenes for the DVD Extra's. Firstly i've put all the footage from the behind the scenes of the main shoot in, and i'm awaiting the interviews to incorporate them in as well, and i'm also making sure we include some of the live footage we recorded which wasnt used for the final music video. I have also made a start to the 'Meet The Band' feature that we're hoping to include. Over half term, I think the rest of the group are planning on taking out a camera to film interviews with the band which I cannot attend due to myself being on holiday.

DVD Extra's - 'Meet The Band'
Our group came up with an idea for another DVD extra that would be quite a fun way to introduce our band other than the 'behind the scenes' would be a 'Meet the band' style interview. This interview would be a way for the viewers to really get to know the band, asking different questions and seeing how well they know each other.
This is a video of a band called 'We The Kings' which feature the interviewer asking them a series of questions on royal families and monarchs which is relative to the name of their band. With this in mind, we came up with the idea of coming up with a list of questions about Starfish (because of the name of their band) and the ocean in general. I think this is just a way to get to know the down-to-earth nature of the band, which we wanted to perceive in our music video so would be very relevant.
The band Amely show a 'meet the band' video here, which is available to view on their Record labels Youtube page. After researching the band further, they are a new rock band, which is why I think its a good idea to introduce each of the members showing what they all play. In this video it does just that. It begins by showing the bands name in their logo style and then featuring the band members talking about themselves and their other members. This is a way of showing the viewers who they really are and how they act round each other and these interviews are also edited within clips of the band performing and behind the scenesas well, which has given me some really good ideas for the way our interview is edited together.

DVD Extra's - Behind The Scenes
As I've been working on editing together some of the behind the scenes of our music video, I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at some artists behind the scenes work and see how they edited it all together and what approach they took to do it.
This is the behind the scenes video to Taylor Swifts song 'You Belong With Me' and shows more of a long documentary than a short 5 minute feature. The behind the scenes is in 4 parts, due to the various location chances and mass production of the video. It manages to blend in the instrumental of the song as a background to the video footage shown which features various amounts of interviews on the move. The first one shown is when the singer herself introduces the beginning of the behind the scenes and talks a bit about the shoot ahead, the weather and how she is feeling. I think it's important to include this as it gives the viewers and inside to what the artist's schedual is like and the emotions they are feeling too.
As well as interviewing the main star of the music video, there are also several mini interviews with members of the band that are less important, but still play a vital role within the music track. Thes interviews normally run while images of behind the scenes are shown which keeps the audience interested in the clips because they feature the interviews themselves.
There are several little interviews with the director as well here he talks about how the artist is performing, what he wants to be created and what is happening on the shoot at the current time. I think this is also very important as it gives the viewers and insight to the creative mind of the director and his approach to this music video, whilst also showing what kinds of jobs he has and how he is very mush in control of the whole shoot.
In the behind the scenes for Maroon 5 video 'Never Gonna Leave This Bed' there is a much less professional approach, as it mainly consists of roughly edited of clips put together to show the camera filming the artist. The video features annotations on it which explain in some areas what's happening without blacking out the sound. I think I'd like to make our music video behind the scenes more professional with effective editing so that it runs smoothly through and shows a journey from the beginning to the end.
In the 'behind the scenes' for Greyson Chance's music video, it is very much introducing the artist as he's new on the scene. This is similar to what we need to create, to make sure that the viewers establish the artist (or group in our case), and maybe feature a longer behind the scenes to establish a 'get to know' the band. I also like how the footage shows exclusive features of the music video as well as its being filmed. I think this gives a real insight to how each shot was thought through and put together, which I would definitly like to include in our own 'behind the scenes'.

Group Meeting
Since finishing filming, we've met up as a group on several occasions to see what progress we are making and identify what we should all be doing. Jamie was efficiently getting on with editing, and coming to each one of us to show what progress he had made. We decided to get back into contact with the band and look to have them coming into school to film the interviews sometime within the next two weeks.
While looking at the start of the edited music video, i've suggested ideas on how to improve the current style its edited in, however we're looking to just finish a rough one soon and then identify soe key areas of improvement through each of our individual preferences and also through others in our media class and around the school. This will give us an idea as to whether the music video is edited together efficiently, whether it cuts to the beat and finally whether it captures the audiences attention.
Altogether we have more than enough footage to fill the music video, and we finally transferred the footage from the tape of one camera onto the computer which features the live footage of the band performing their own gig. However it has been said that music videos that have a narrative in them are generally better than those without because it captures the audience's attention and doesnt let them lose interest. During my researching into music videos within the rock genre, I did find it very difficult to find modern music videos that didnt have the narrative within them. It could be an idea that after making a rough cut final music video, we could see what response people have to it and think about whether or not it's worth filming a narrative for.
In the meantime, Kerrin, Paige and I are all helping to assist Jamie on editing the music video at the same time as i'm working with Paige on the DVD extras. Paige is the producer of the extra's, and i've decided to help edit the behind the scenes with the help from Paige's direction. However many of the behind the scenes do contain some interviews with the band, so there is only so much of this I can do without the interviews.

Looking at effective editing
This video won MTV's video Music Award for Best Editing, having been edited by Jarrett Fijal who had also won in 2009 with Beyonce's video 'Single Ladies'.
The video is quite similar to ours in the sense that it takes place in various locations like this one, however it consists of many stereotypes of pop videos such as the choreographed dance routines. The video consists of editing that cuts between the various locations and show the artist in different situations. Towards the end of the video, there are several fade outs to sync to the beat of the video and fade back in to show the progression of time as the artist moves around the same location.
The editing itself shows quite long shots of the footage, not cutting as frequently as the beat of the music suggests. For our. This works for the music video because there are lots of other things going on such as the narrative, dance routines and changing of location. For our music video, I don't think we'd be able to leave shots as long as this because it is just a performance video, which means we might need to look into other music video performances and see how they're edited together.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Greenday
At the start of this project, we looked into our bands influence and one of the bands which they took influence from was Greenday. Taking this into account, I decided to look to see how their music videos were constructed together. I once again looked into the MTV Video Music Awards and found that in 2005 for their video 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' which was edited by Tim Royes.
The video shows an alternate convention of the rock genre because it shows a slight narrative and the band miming along and appearing more like a boyband. Throughout the video there is an effect that makes the video appear old showing it as the past. I think this is very effective and relates to the lyrics quite nicely, and I think we might be able to use a similar techinique because our lyrics show a worn out relationship thats in the past and wanting to be forgotten about. The editing shows various different angles, which we have filmed, and only shows the performance over half way through the song. As a rock genre, it consists of lots of slow motioned action shots, for example the drummer being shown in slow motion before hitting the symbols which I think really captures the audience in to see what's going to happen next. The video mixes various shot angles together, and contains a lot of blurred out shots too to create a mystery to the video, and th shakey camera is also used to create the action shots and making the audience feel a part of the music.
From this video I will look at taking the ideas of the worn out overall video effect to show the worn down relationship and the slow motion that comes during the performance side of the video to try and keep the viewers interested.

Promotional Stills - Unedited
Here are some of the promotional stills taken from the day of filming. The photographs aren't final, and they haven't been edited yet, but this will be done after some more research into promotional stills. We decided that we wanted to show the band in the location that they filmed in as it was a slighty worn down warehouse that had an effect that the band was older but it really showed the rock genre come through.
Band Photos
Individual Photo's
Im going to start looking into bands artwork and promotional pictures to see what techniques they use in order to portray the rock genre and each individual member.

First Meeting After Filming
Today we met as a group in lesson and we talked through how well the shooting and filming had gone and how excited we were for post production. Jamie had copied all the files from the cameras over to a computer and worked out that altogether we had about 3hrs 15minutes worth of footage, including backstage footage. This shows that we have a lot of footage to use for a three minute video. Jamie was also very well prepared in going through each and every shot and clip on the file and renamed it to a description of it. This will mean that when we start editing the video, it will be much easier in trying to identify clips if they are named, and much easier to go through the long list of footage.
Now that we have all the footage, we're going to slowly progress through post production while bearing in mind the storyboard that I originally drew up and also go through all the clips we have. We did start to do this during the lesson and we identified problems and ideas we had to overcome these such as 'continuity' of shots as the ipod dock was moved a couple of time. Due to some of our group having important exams at the moment, we will begin to plan an action for the editing and slowly progress and maybe in the end come out with a few idea's for the overall music video and select which one is more effective.
Also from this meeting we decided we need to get the band together and into the school sooner rather than later to film the interview with them and some of our documentary as well. This way the filming is still fresh in their mind and it's one less thing to worry about.

Day of Filming - Saturday 15th January 2011
On Saturday 15th January, the whole group met at Kerrin's house at 9.30 to make sure we had all the required equipment, cameras and tripods. After making sure we had all of these, we then sat down and went through a plan of action for the day. We decided that it would be best to run through the whole song with certain shot types each time, rather than having to keep cutting the song and only running through certain parts. This was to make sure that we had enough footage to cover the whole song so that we wouldnt have difficulties during post production. After talking for about an hour, we then all left at about 10.30am.
On route to Hertforshire, we picked up Helen Pearman who also does media studies and was in another group, and she would film our behind the scenes feature for the DVD extras. We arrived at 11.45 and Jamie then phoned the band to inform them we had arrived and at midday the whole band arrived and showed us into the location whilst they started unpacking. We all discussed where would be the best place to situate the band and then decided on the actual location because of the open space and great high angle views from the balcony's around the building. Once we confirmed that, the band started setting up in agreed areas. Whilst they were doing this, we asked for Helen to set up a camera facing straight on and film for the duration of setting up, this way for the DVD extras in post production we would fast forward it which is what many other artists use in their behind the scenes. We then just asked Helen to film whatever she could of us directing the band and talking them through what we wanted to do and achieve.
Having taken in the location, we discussed as a group the ways in which we could use our surroundings, and decided to alter the beginning. We started with Steve, Alan W, and Mark all walking in from different areas of the factory and coming together before starting to play. During these shots we used low angle close ups of each members instruments and then zoomed out to reveal the artist, this was what I wanted to create since researching into other rock bands music video. To show them all walk in together we used a high angle shot from two different balcony's to show the bands isolationism. All of this is going to be put before the music track even starts and the process of shooting these few seconds took much longer than we anticipated. After this we looked at the storyboard and decided to set up 3 cameras on the floor, one focused on the guitarist, one focused on the bass guitarist and the other on the lead singer. These would each be manned by one of us, and a final camera was put up on the balcony to get the high angle shot, but we made sure that all the cameras were out of view. We ran through the song twice with the cameras in these positions, however on both occasions Steve's guitar strap came off half way through the song, however we still decided to proceed on and change the shot types to save time going over the same part of the song.
On the change, I decided that the song needed lots of close up shots, so we proceeded to move all three cameras forward so they each had a closeup of the front 3 memebers. We then bought the camera from the balcony down and situated it to the side to focus on the drummer so that he wasn't excluded from the band. I then just asked the band to repeat the song and their actions so that we could get continuity, though it wasnt as important for the rock genre. After each take, we gave the band a short break whilst we moved the cameras to the next position. After a few hours of filming, we were aware that Jamie needed to be back for work at 4, so we should think about leaving at 2.30. With this in mind we decided to get as many different shot types in as few takes as possible. I asked each member to do something different, and get in some low angle shots and then near the end of the song, Kerrin and I would move to the back behind the drummer and get some shots of the whole band, but we had to be careful not to get the members of our group in shot.
Eventually we called it a wrap, and because of the lateness we decided that we would do our interviews with the band at a later date, but we had the main footage which was very important. I feel that I worked well with the other memebers of the group and ensured that any decisions on shots were justified and also approved by the other members too. I think in particular, Kerrin and I worked well together talking through what we were going to do which I think is crucial for any media project to work well.
Before we left, Paige took some promotional stills of the band in position and during the duration of filming she also took plenty of behind the scenes shots to include in the DVD extras package. Helen also did a great job in getting plenty of footage and we will watch through this once we're back at school to start thinking about how we will include it into the DVD extras.

Final Location
After contacting the band on Friday, we confirmed the location of a factory in Hertfordshire which was very similar to the warehouse idea we initially started with. We're hoping that the location really depicts the meaning of the lyrics and show a symbol of freedom from a relationship that has been worn out.
Here are some images of the location
We are expected to arrive just before midday on Saturday 15th January to start setting up in preperation for filming.

Filming - Strengths and Weaknesses
Having shot our music video, I decided to have a look on some of our strengths and weaknesses from the shoot and some area's that were improved on from my preliminary task
Strengths
Strengths
- Punctual
- Plenty of footage filmed
- Various shot types used
- Kept to the storyboard and shot list to some extent
- Each member fulfilled their task on the day of the shoot
- Filmed plenty of behind the scenes footage
- Could have used some more time to film the band interview and other DVD extras, but we will be doing this at a later dat
- Some of the shots have people in or the ipod speakers in. But this shouldnt matter too much because of the amount of shots we got
- It took a lot longer for the band to set up than first thought
- Some shots took longer than expected

Risk Assessment
Due to a change in locations, Kerrin asked me to edit the existing risk assessment before we took out the cameras today.
As we're now filming in a factory, their are a lot more risks and hazards that we have to take into account but because the filming inside this time, there will be less risks with the equipment and rain.
