Group Meeting

Since finishing filming, we've met up as a group on several occasions to see what progress we are making and identify what we should all be doing. Jamie was efficiently getting on with editing, and coming to each one of us to show what progress he had made. We decided to get back into contact with the band and look to have them coming into school to film the interviews sometime within the next two weeks.

While looking at the start of the edited music video, i've suggested ideas on how to improve the current style its edited in, however we're looking to just finish a rough one soon and then identify soe key areas of improvement through each of our individual preferences and also through others in our media class and around the school. This will give us an idea as to whether the music video is edited together efficiently, whether it cuts to the beat and finally whether it captures the audiences attention.

Altogether we have more than enough footage to fill the music video, and we finally transferred the footage from the tape of one camera onto the computer which features the live footage of the band performing their own gig. However it has been said that music videos that have a narrative in them are generally better than those without because it captures the audience's attention and doesnt let them lose interest. During my researching into music videos within the rock genre, I did find it very difficult to find modern music videos that didnt have the narrative within them. It could be an idea that after making a rough cut final music video, we could see what response people have to it and think about whether or not it's worth filming a narrative for.

In the meantime, Kerrin, Paige and I are all helping to assist Jamie on editing the music video at the same time as i'm working with Paige on the DVD extras. Paige is the producer of the extra's, and i've decided to help edit the behind the scenes with the help from Paige's direction. However many of the behind the scenes do contain some interviews with the band, so there is only so much of this I can do without the interviews.

Looking at effective editing

This video won MTV's video Music Award for Best Editing, having been edited by Jarrett Fijal who had also won in 2009 with Beyonce's video 'Single Ladies'.

The video is quite similar to ours in the sense that it takes place in various locations like this one, however it consists of many stereotypes of pop videos such as the choreographed dance routines. The video consists of editing that cuts between the various locations and show the artist in different situations. Towards the end of the video, there are several fade outs to sync to the beat of the video and fade back in to show the progression of time as the artist moves around the same location.

The editing itself shows quite long shots of the footage, not cutting as frequently as the beat of the music suggests. For our. This works for the music video because there are lots of other things going on such as the narrative, dance routines and changing of location. For our music video, I don't think we'd be able to leave shots as long as this because it is just a performance video, which means we might need to look into other music video performances and see how they're edited together.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Greenday

At the start of this project, we looked into our bands influence and one of the bands which they took influence from was Greenday. Taking this into account, I decided to look to see how their music videos were constructed together. I once again looked into the MTV Video Music Awards and found that in 2005 for their video 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' which was edited by Tim Royes.

The video shows an alternate convention of the rock genre because it shows a slight narrative and the band miming along and appearing more like a boyband. Throughout the video there is an effect that makes the video appear old showing it as the past. I think this is very effective and relates to the lyrics quite nicely, and I think we might be able to use a similar techinique because  our lyrics show a worn out relationship thats in the past and wanting to be forgotten about. The editing shows various different angles, which we have filmed, and only shows the performance over half way through the song. As a rock genre, it consists of lots of slow motioned action shots, for example the drummer being shown in slow motion before hitting the symbols which I think really captures the audience in to see what's going to happen next. The video mixes various shot angles together, and contains a lot of blurred out shots too to create a mystery to the video, and th shakey camera is also used to create the action shots and making the audience feel a part of the music.

From this video I will look at taking the ideas of the worn out overall video effect to show the worn down relationship and the slow motion that comes during the performance side of the video to try and keep the viewers interested.

Promotional Stills - Unedited

Here are some of the promotional stills taken from the day of filming. The photographs aren't final, and they haven't been edited yet, but this will be done after some more research into promotional stills. We decided that we wanted to show the band in the location that they filmed in as it was a slighty worn down warehouse that had an effect that the band was older but it really showed the rock genre come through.

Individual Photo's

Im going to start looking into bands artwork and promotional pictures to see what techniques they use in order to portray the rock genre and each individual member.

Meet the Band - Starfish

 Mark Roden - Guitarist

Alan Westwood - Bass Guitarist and backup singer
Alan T - Drummer

Stephen Streater - Lead guitarist and lead singer

First Meeting After Filming

Today we met as a group in lesson and we talked through how well the shooting and filming had gone and how excited we were for post production. Jamie had copied all the files from the cameras over to a computer and worked out that altogether we had about 3hrs 15minutes worth of footage, including backstage footage. This shows that we have a lot of footage to use for a three minute video. Jamie was also very well prepared in going through each and every shot and clip on the file and renamed it to a description of it. This will mean that when we start editing the video, it will be much easier in trying to identify clips if they are named, and much easier to go through the long list of footage.

Now that we have all the footage, we're going to slowly progress through post production while bearing in mind the storyboard that I originally drew up and also go through all the clips we have. We did start to do this during the lesson and we identified problems and ideas we had to overcome these such as 'continuity' of shots as the ipod dock was moved a couple of time. Due to some of our group having important exams at the moment, we will begin to plan an action for the editing and slowly progress and maybe in the end come out with a few idea's for the overall music video and select which one is more effective.

Also from this meeting we decided we need to get the band together and into the school sooner rather than later to film the interview with them and some of our documentary as well. This way the filming is still fresh in their mind and it's one less thing to worry about.

Pictures From Filming - Behind the Scenes

Day of Filming - Saturday 15th January 2011

On Saturday 15th January, the whole group met at Kerrin's house at 9.30 to make sure we had all the required equipment, cameras and tripods. After making sure we had all of these, we then sat down and went through a plan of action for the day. We decided that it would be best to run through the whole song with certain shot types each time, rather than having to keep cutting the song and only running through certain parts. This was to make sure that we had enough footage to cover the whole song so that we wouldnt have difficulties during post production. After talking for about an hour, we then all left at about 10.30am.

On route to Hertforshire, we picked up Helen Pearman who also does media studies and was in another group, and she would film our behind the scenes feature for the DVD extras. We arrived at 11.45 and Jamie then phoned the band to inform them we had arrived and at midday the whole band arrived and showed us into the location whilst they started unpacking. We all discussed where would be the best place to situate the band and then decided on the actual location because of the open space and great high angle views from the balcony's around the building. Once we confirmed that, the band started setting up in agreed areas. Whilst they were doing this, we asked for Helen to set up a camera facing straight on and film for the duration of setting up, this way for the DVD extras in post production we would fast forward it which is what many other artists use in their behind the scenes. We then just asked Helen to film whatever she could of us directing the band and talking them through what we wanted to do and achieve.

Having taken in the location, we discussed as a group the ways in which we could use our surroundings, and decided to alter the beginning. We started with Steve, Alan W, and Mark all walking in from different areas of the factory and coming together before starting to play. During these shots we used low angle close ups of each members instruments and then zoomed out to reveal the artist, this was what I wanted to create since researching into other rock bands music video. To show them all walk in together we used a high angle shot from two different balcony's to show the bands isolationism. All of this is going to be put before the music track even starts and the process of shooting these few seconds took much longer than we anticipated. After this we looked at the storyboard and decided to set up 3 cameras on the floor, one focused on the guitarist, one focused on the bass guitarist and the other on the lead singer. These would each be manned by one of us, and a final camera was put up on the balcony to get the high angle shot, but we made sure that all the cameras were out of view. We ran through the song twice with the cameras in these positions, however on both occasions Steve's guitar strap came off half way through the song, however we still decided to proceed on and change the shot types to save time going over the same part of the song.

On the change, I decided that the song needed lots of close up shots, so we proceeded to move all three cameras forward so they each had a closeup of the front 3 memebers. We then bought the camera from the balcony down and situated it to the side to focus on the drummer so that he wasn't excluded from the band. I then just asked the band to repeat the song and their actions so that we could get continuity, though it wasnt as important for the rock genre. After each take, we gave the band a short break whilst we moved the cameras to the next position. After a few hours of filming, we were aware that Jamie needed to be back for work at 4, so we should think about leaving at 2.30. With this in mind we decided to get as many different shot types in as few takes as possible. I asked each member to do something different, and get in some low angle shots and then near the end of the song, Kerrin and I would move to the back behind the drummer and get some shots of the whole band, but we had to be careful not to get the members of our group in shot.

Eventually we called it a wrap, and because of the lateness we decided that we would do our interviews with the band at a later date, but we had the main footage which was very important. I feel that I worked well with the other memebers of the group and ensured that any decisions on shots were justified and also approved by the other members too. I think in particular, Kerrin and I worked well together talking through what we were going to do which I think is crucial for any media project to work well.

Before we left, Paige took some promotional stills of the band in position and during the duration of filming she also took plenty of behind the scenes shots to include in the DVD extras package. Helen also did a great job in getting plenty of footage and we will watch through this once we're back at school to start thinking about how we will include it into the DVD extras.

Final Location

After contacting the band on Friday, we confirmed the location of a factory in Hertfordshire which was very similar to the warehouse idea we initially started with. We're hoping that the location really depicts the meaning of the lyrics and show a symbol of freedom from a relationship that has been worn out.

Here are some images of the location

We are expected to arrive just before midday on Saturday 15th January to start setting up in preperation for filming.

Filming - Strengths and Weaknesses

Having shot our music video, I decided to have a look on some of our strengths and weaknesses from the shoot and some area's that were improved on from my preliminary task

Strengths
  • Punctual
  • Plenty of footage filmed
  • Various shot types used
  • Kept to the storyboard and shot list to some extent
  • Each member fulfilled their task on the day of the shoot
  • Filmed plenty of behind the scenes footage
Weaknesses
  • Could have used some more time to film the band interview and other DVD extras, but we will be doing this at a later dat
  • Some of the shots have people in or the ipod speakers in. But this shouldnt matter too much because of the amount of shots we got
  • It took a lot longer for the band to set up than first thought
  • Some shots took longer than expected
In terms of progress from the preliminary task, I think that this shoot was much calmer and relaxed because we were so prepared. We filmed plenty more footage for this main task and more variety of shot types which helps in post production. However timing was also an issue from the preliminary task, and even though we allocated about 3 hours for the shoot, because of the technical aspects and the location we were in, it took much longer to move from shot to shot and motivate the band to perform again.

Due to a change in locations, Kerrin asked me to edit the existing risk assessment before we took out the cameras today.

As we're now filming in a factory, their are a lot more risks and hazards that we have to take into account but because the filming inside this time, there will be less risks with the equipment and rain.
