Cut to The Beat Music Video - Preliminary Task

During the preliminary task, we were asked to produce a short music video for the first verse and chorus of a certain music track and asked to edit it to the beat. We were put into groups and asked to assign roles within each one, and for this I was the camerawoman and editor.

The definition of a camerawoman is someone that operates the camera to record, in this case, a music video. They are responsible for operating the camera by framing shots and maintaining the correct shot type throughout the recording. They take directions from the director and are presented the storyboard as well so they understand the shots required. This was quite an important role in the group as my footage would be what they viewers would see, but working well with the director made this much easier. For this I feel like I was successful in taking direction and also suggesting some camera movement alternatives when certain ones didn’t work out. One of the good parts of our footage was that we had a wide variety of shots that we could chose from which made it much easier during editing and meant we’d covered the whole song from our shots.

Another one of my roles was as editor, which is the one responsible for editing together filmed clips for music videos through special effects and a variety of techniques. For a music video it’s crucial to overlay the musical track with relevant footage and in some cases match the lip syncing with the track to make the video authentic. Both my roles worked quite well together as I filmed the footage and was the one editing it all together, however I did have input from the director and producer of the group as well to make sure that we made group decisions. With the task being a ‘cut to the beat’ task, a lot of the pressure was put on my role, however I think that working as a group together to make sure we agreed with each shot put in place helped us to produce a successful video.

In the main task, I have taken a different role in being the director. The director is often seen as the creative influence of, in this case, the music video who directs the band members and the cameraman. They are responsible for deciding what shots should be used and how the overall video will look, making it important for them to take into account the genre of the music through research. As well as camera shots, they’re also the ones to decide the lighting of the video, if any, and must work closely with everyone involved in order to establish the right set and location. One of the main roles is to establish a storyboard for the video for the cameraman to follow, making it much easier for them. During editing the directors are also present to ensure that the correct shots are selected and that their creative influence is kept throughout the process.

I decided this was a good role for me because it was different from my preliminary tasks, and gives me a wider range of skills that I can develop on. Having been on the receiving end of the director in the first task, I feel for the main one that I have the ideas and creative flare to make decisions and decide the importance of shots. Having an interest in music and music videos definitely influenced my decision in becoming director and I hope that I can achieve a good relationship with the rest of the group in order to produce a successful video.
